Match Report:

HOYLAKE v SEFTON GUNNERS (Under 10s)

 12 November 2006

1st Game Final Score: Hoylake 2 tries - Sefton Gunners 7 tries
Sefton Gunners traveled to Hoylake on Sunday 12 November to claim a satisfying win in difficult circumstances.

After a 2-minute silence to commemorate Armistice Day, the aptly named Gunners opened the score with a try from Paddy McMullen, converted with confidence by Caleb Williams.

A second try from Paddy soon followed, and then when Joe Heritage failed to offload in the tackle, he was left with no choice but to force his way over the try line to score himself.

Hoylake could not compete with the visitors’ improving tactical skills and determination.  Ryan O’Donnell led the forwards with conviction, piling over the line to score his first try of the morning.  By the time scrum half Patrick McGreary had converted his own try, increasing the score line to 5-0, the home team was beginning to feel the strain.  A return score and conversion brought them briefly back into the game, but was met with an immediate reply from Caleb Williams, powering through the Hoylake defences for the first of his four tries of the day.

In the second half tempers began to fray as the home side realized they were outmatched, and the referee had to caution both sides before Caleb fought his way through for his second try.  Hoylake managed a late consolation score before Full Time but there was never really any doubt about the outcome of this match.

2nd Game Final Score: Hoylake 0 – Sefton Gunners 5

Both sides agreed to play again, although the overcast sky and constant drizzle was by now reflecting their gloomy moods.  Hoylake were unable to keep possession long enough to make effective use of the ball, and any attempts at attack were met with Sefton’s solid defences.  The game continued to be confrontational, but this only increased the Gunners’ determination to score at every opportunity, and brothers Shaun and Owen Keating made their presence felt in their debut for Sefton.

Winger Matt Hughes was unlucky to have an excellent individual try disallowed after stepping into touch on his way to the line, but fly half Luke Baxendale made amends by opening up the scores for the Gunners, followed by his own conversion.

Unfortunately there were problems with discipline at the restart and some high tackles had to be dealt with.  But by now Sefton was certain of another victory, with Adam Beckwith offering untiring support play to help ensure a win. Caleb eventually charged through for two more tries, and Matt finally got to put his own name on the score sheet with a more satisfying second attempt.  Ryan closed the account with his second try of the day, after making a number of giant individual assaults on the opposition defences.

A resounding victory for Sefton Gunners Under 10s, but with some warnings from the referee regarding conduct for both sides.  It is now important that the team consolidates its gathering confidence by working on good pitch discipline.
